Little Moons: TikTok’s Sweet sensation

Little Moons are delicious mochi dough wrapped balls of indulgent gelato ice cream. They were the UK's best kept secret in gourmet desserts; if you were in the know, then it wouldn't have surprised you to see Little Moons become a viral sensation on TikTok in February 2021.

Like most brilliant viral ideas on the platform, this trend was driven by its community of creators. Take 13 deliciously flavoured, beautifully coloured, squidgy balls of ice cream, mix with a tribe of TikTokers looking for lockdown levity and whose only escape – like all of us – is a trip to the supermarket. Hey presto, mochi magic. 

Little Moons becomes Tik Tok’s biggest food craze. Millions of people started recording themselves going initially to #Big Tesco to find Little Moons, this feverish search quickly spread to other supermarkets and stores with a community of creators hunting them down across the UK, eating them and capturing the entire process.

TikTok isn’t for everybody as its user base is dominated by Gen X & Z. So as Little Moons PR agency, our job was to make sure that the mochi makers brand fame transcended into broader culture by seeding this phenomenal viral sensation to media. Over 100 pieces of coverage later across regional, trade, consumer lifestyle and national media including The Telegraph, Mail Online, Express, Mirror, Sun to name a few we can safely say Little Moons was the cultural trend on everyone’s lips.

But most importantly was the immediate business impact seen by Little Moons: an unprecedented increase in sales; hundreds of enquiries from supermarkets and convenience retailers; new listings secured and hundreds of sample requests delivered to media and influencers.  This shows the power of earned media and influence at its best.
